Fine Foliage Plants

Sweet potato vines are essential components for container combinations that perform admirably across North America in sun and part shade. This year, we’ve improved the habit of our popular Sweet Caroline Bewitched to make it easier for growers to use in combinations. We’ve also added a lime green selection to pair with it perfectly, and given the purple selection in our Sweet Caroline Sweetheart line an extra boost of deep purple, colorfast pigment. It’s a good year for Ipomoea!

Sweet Caroline Bewitched AFTER MIDNIGHT Ipomoea batatas

New this year, Bewitched After Midnight replaces the standard Bewitched. While Bewitched had great color, it tended to be too tightly mounded to mix easily with other plants in combinations. The new Bewitched After Midnight has very similar foliage, but a more relaxed, fluffier habit that leaves space for Supertunia® and other trailing plants to weave through its branches in combinations. It is perfectly matched in size and habit to the new Bewitched Green with Envy.  10-16” tall x 18-30” spread.

What’s New:  A more relaxed, trailing habit that is easier to pair with other vigorous plants in combinations

Sweet Caroline Bewitched GREEN WITH ENVY Ipomoea batatas

A new color in our popular line of Bewitched Ipomoea, Green with Envy is perfectly matched in size and habit to the new Bewitched After Midnight. Its lime green foliage is an essential component for combinations where it makes hot reds, magentas and purples really pop. Its fluffy habit allows just enough space for other trailing plants to weave through and form well-rounded combinations.  10-16” tall x 18-30” spread.

What’s New:  A new color for the Sweet Caroline Betwitched line, well-matched to the new Bewitched After Midnight

Sweet Caroline Sweetheart JET BLACK Ipomoea batatas

It’s time for an upgrade. Replacing Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Purple this year is a much deeper purple selection that retains its supersaturated coloration even in full sun and hot climates. Jet Black is well-matched to Sweetheart Lime in leaf size and overall plant size, making it an easy substitute in dramatic combinations where only black will do. Like a little black dress, it goes anywhere—baskets, containers or landscapes.  8-12” tall x 20-36” spread.

What’s New:  Supersaturated deep purple coloration that is sunfast even in full sun and hot climates

Combo Idea: Among the Stars

Uses for Sweet Caroline Ipomoea: The new Sweet Caroline Bewitched Ipomoeas are much better component plants for combinations than their predecessors. Pair them with other vigorous cultivars in combinations for sun and part shade. They also make fast growing, heat tolerant groundcovers for northern and southern regions.

Grower Tips for Sweet Caroline Ipomoea:

  • Feed with 200-250ppm fertilizer for optimum growth
  • Maintain good air circulation and keep the foliage as dry as possible during production. Prolonged wet foliage may lead to bacterial leaf spot.
  • Pinch liners once, two weeks after transplant.
  • PGRs are not usually needed for Sweet Caroline Bewitched varieties. Sweet Caroline Sweetheart varieties may require PGRs to hold plants in small containers.
