Magical Fall Foliage
Don't forget the foliage! Use these Proven Winners foliage varieties in your fall garden.
As fall sweeps in with cool night and crisp days it is nice to have plants in your garden that show the change in season as well! Proven Winners® has many annual and perennial plants that are both cold tolerant plants and have either striking flowers or foliage. In nature, fall foliage comes in a variety of colors many of which are mirrored here.
Yellow - Many leaves in fall turn bright yellow and we have 6 varieties that have yellow to chartreuse foliage. Acorus 'Ogon' is a short grass, 8-14 inches tall, that loves damp conditions and mixes extremely well in combinations. 'Ogon' is yellow and green variegated. It is an excellent plant to add a bit of a vertical element without being overpowering for small combinations. It is also an excellent filler plant for larger combinations. In the ground or in pots, Fun and Games® Leapfrog makes a bold textural statement with its colorful burgundy and yellow foliage. Salvia 'Icterina' has green and yellow variegated foliage and is also a great filler plant in combinations as well as in landscaped beds. Also in this color class is Lysimachia 'Goldilocks' which has round, chartreuse colored leaves on a very prostrate habit. It is excellent spilling over the edge of a combination planter. Sedum ‘Lemon Ball is an annual but adds fine textured yellow to combinations spring through fall. The last plant in this category is Heuchera Dolce® ‘Appletini’. The stunning chartreuse yellow foliage is totally unique and quite beautiful. If that isn't enough to entice you, its USDA zone 5 hardiness will probably clinch it. It is great in ground beds and containers alike.

Silver to white foliage is popular in our fall collection as well. There are 4 plants that exhibit these colors. First are Helichrysum 'Icicles' which have soft silver colored foliage. ‘Icicles’ is used as filler plants in combinations and an excellent highlight plant. Salvia 'Tricolor' has green, white, and pink variegated foliage and is an excellent filler plant in either beds or planters. The last plant with silver foliage is Lamium Pink Chablis which has what appears to be almost silver net overlaying green foliage. This mounding plant will fill in the middle ground of combination planters but will also spill over the edge in a cascade of silver green foliage.

Red to purple foliage is also popular in fall. This is the largest category in our collection. Here is where the Dolce® Heuchera really shine! All Heuchera change color in the fall once the cold nights begin, usually this brings out deep rose and purple tones in the leaves, Check out Dolce® Black Currant, Blackberry Ice and Cinnamon Curls, all provide some gorgeous tones in fall. Don’t forget the perennial grasses for great fall color as well! 'Cheyenne Sky' Red Switch Grass forms a dense, upright clump of blue-green leaves that begin to turn wine red in early summer. Purple flower panicles appear just above the foliage in late summer. This petite red grass is ideal for containers. Summerific® ‘Summer Storm’ makes a rich statement all season with thick purple foliage and huge red and pink flowers in summer.

Tans and Taupe - As summer fades into fall there is an abundance of browns to be seen, from soft fawn to dark coffee and cinnamon, brown pulls the fall color scheme together. One of our best plants is in this color class. Carex 'Toffee Twist', a fairly tall (18-24") grass with mahogany colored foliage that twists and twirls, is our version of the fall mainstay color. It is a great anchor plant and mixes well with almost all of the other plants in the fall collection. Of course the feathery heads of Pennisetum 'Desert Plains' remain a lovely tan shade and move with the wind right up through the first snows of winter. It can be used in a variety of containers and landscapes and add a unifying element to all of your plantings. To pull a bit something a bit pinker into the fall mix, try using Sedum ‘Pure Joy’ - a very compact and solid mass of pink flowers with a few rose highlights persists until winter freezes. Don’t forget Dolce ‘Crème Brûlée’ which has lovely rusty brown foliage that gets some pink highlights in fall!
